Rock of Love Winner

If you watch the show, Rock of Love, then you already know that Jes won on last night's finale. She won the heart of Poison front man, Bret Michaels.

I must admit that I'm happy she won. I liked Heather, but just didn't like the way she was acting there towards the end. Was Jes the one you hoped to win or did you have another favorite who left the show earlier then you'd hoped? Let me know by leaving a comment.

TGIF

I am so ready for the weekend. This has just been a long week. The days have just seemed to drag by.

Dad is doing much better. The dr. took him off his blood pressure medicine for awhile to see if he needs it anymore. He said the dosage was probably playing a big part in dad's heart rate being so low too. Tuesday his heart was only beating about 45 bpm, but yesterday it was up to around 80 bpm. Dad thought it was too high, but the dr. assured him that was fine (I guess you should aim to have it between 60-90 bpm?).

I have had several people stop me throughout the week to ask how he is doing. That's what happens when you're pretty well known in a small town:) I've heard all sorts of rumors of what happened. I even had one guy tell me he was so sorry to hear that dad had passed away!!!! NOT FUNNY! Imagine this guys surprise when he saw dad in the shop two days later. I'm sure he felt terrible, but geez. Get your facts straight before approaching someone.

Had lunch today with my mom and aunt. That was fun. We could have sat there for hours chatting, but unfortunately I had to cut it short to get back here and work. My boss (hubby) sure is a slave driver some days:)

I have absolutely nothing planned for this weekend. I'm hoping to just lounge around and enjoy the beautiful weather. It's supposed to be wonderful all weekend so I will probably be outdoors a lot.

Senior Dating

I saw a story on tv the other day that was so sweet. It was about a couple who were 90 years old and had just gotten married. They had been former classmates, but had never dated each other. They started dating each other after meeting again at their 70th high school reunion.

Now, I know there are seniors out there that are thinking that they would like to get out into the dating scene and not have to wait to find someone at their high school reunion, but don't know how to go about it. Well, there is a new website out there for senior singles called Datingforseniors.com.

Some senior dating sites offer too little and charge you too much, but Datingforseniors.com is different. They feature only REAL seniors who are looking to find that special someone to spend their life with. Visit their website today. Sign up is FREE.

Slower Day Today

Thankfully today has been much less exciting then yesterday. Talked to mom earlier and dad is doing much better today although he did take today off work to continue to rest up. I think that's probably for the best. The doctor said he will be fine and there wasn't any damage from his seizure, but dad needs to take some time to relax anyway. He works way too hard. He's always been that way though so nothing new there.

Grab Your Skiis!

Have you ever wanted to go on a luxury ski trip, maybe to Europe? Wouldn't skiing down the Swiss Alps be the coolest getaway you could ever imagine? Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a company out there who could help you plan the most fabulous vacation imaginable? Well, then grab your skiis. Supertravel is a UK based company with more then 40 years in travel experience. They have specific departments dedicated to ski and golf vacations. SuperTravel Ski has luxury ski chalets in St Anton, Austria and also in Courchevel and Meribel, France. If you are looking to take a luxury ski vacation, visit their website to find out more about what they have to offer.

What happens when you take too much blood pressure medicine?

You pass out and have a seizure, which is exactly what my dad did this morning! The story goes like this: Mom and I had just finished up at the gym and when we walked outside to go to my car, we saw an ambulance parked in the same block as my dad's shop. Of course, immediately we both think that something has happened to dad. I asked mom if she wanted to walk down there and see, but she said to just call his cell phone so I did. Dad answered, but it sounded like he was really far away. I kept asking if he could hear me, but he didn't answer. When I hung up, I told mom and she said that dad had been having problems with his cell phone and that's probably what was going on. I asked her again if she wanted to stop in to see him, but she said no, since he answered the phone she knew he was ok. So, we get in the car and head home.

About five minutes out of town, I get a call from my hubby. He says that I need to get mom back into town because he just got a call from a friend of ours, saying that they thought dad either had a heart attack or a stroke. So, I calmly slow down and turn into a driveway to turn around and head back into town. Of course, mom goes nuts because she knew what was going on. She started telling me that I needed to drive faster (I was going 90 when she said this!) and then that I needed to call my brother. Ok, I'm going 90 mph and trying to dial a cell phone, probably not the best idea, but I got it done. I told him to meet us at dad's shop. I continue speeding through town (thank goodness there were no cops around) and made it to dad's shop. I pull into a parking spot and mom jumps out of the car before I even come to a complete stop and runs inside. I hop out of the car and see my brother come running down the block so I wait on him. When we walk into dad's shop, we see the EMT's all sitting around dad, who is sitting in a chair with an oxygen mask on his face. He's laughing and joking around and mom, me and my brother are just dumbfounded as to why anybody would have called 911 for this man because he's acting completely normal.

The EMT's filled us in on what happened. Apparantly, dad was cutting a customer's hair when he started to feel hot and nauseous. He stopped for a second then started to feel dizzy so he started to walk over to a chair to sit down when he passed out and had a seizure! One of the customers immediately called 911 and several others ran outside to see if anybody could come in to help dad. Luckily, the sheriff just happened to be walking by so he went in and immediately started helping dad. When the EMT's got there, they hooked dad up to the heart monitor and some oxygen. They said his heart rate was very low (blood pressure meds will do that to you) and that he needed to go to the ER. However, my dad is extremely stubborn and refused to go. Mom said he would go to our family doctor instead and they would go immediately so that's what they did.

That's where we found out that dad had taken too much bp medicine. He takes two different kinds (a beta blocker and a statin) and he refilled the beta blocker a few days ago. When he got home, I guess he put the pills into the old bottle that he already had. It was the wrong bottle though. He put his beta blockers in his statin bottle. This morning when he got his pills out to take, he thought he was getting a statin and a beta blocker, but ended up taking two of the beta blockers instead. Not good.

According to the Atenolol website, "Symptoms of an atenolol overdose may include uneven heartbeats, shortness of breath, bluish-colored fingernails, dizziness, weakness, fainting, or seizure (convulsions)>" Yep, dad had those.

Thankfully, dad is doing fine now. He has given everyone in his immediate family a few more gray hairs today, but at least he is ok.

New Do

Decided last week that my hair needed a major update. It was long and scraggly and I was just wearing it up in a ponytail all the time. Why have long hair if I can't wear it down and have it look decent? So, today I had it fixed. It's shorter then I've had it in awhile. The stylist cut 5+ inches off it! She also fixed the color (it's actually brown now instead of red) and added subtle highlights.

It actually still comes to my shoulders, but you can't really tell that from the picture since my hair blends in with my shirt.

Finally......

The pool guys came out today and my pool is covered and ready to hibernate for the winter. It was a pleasant surprise to see them out here this morning when I got back from town. I guess my calling their office yesterday must have helped a little. I didn't yell. I was very nice and cordial when I called although I really wanted to let them know exactly how I felt.

The only problem I had with the pool guys coming out this morning was that I wasn't here to watch how they closed the pool. That was one thing that I was hoping to see them do so that next year I could do it myself. Oh well. I'll deal with that next year when the time comes. My mom said that my dad could easily show me how to do it so I'll probably be giving him a call.

Bad Credit?

There are so many people in the world today that have gotten themselves into trouble creditwise. In order to get their credit back in good standing, they are now dealing with tons of Bad Credit Offers in the mail every day.

Rather then jumping at the first offer that comes to them in the mail, they need to visit a website that allows them to compare dozens of offers at once and pick the one that will best fit their needs. That website is Badcreditoffers.com. This website will allow the consumer to look at several offers at once and pick the one that will suit their needs to most. Plus, if they make their payments on time, they they could possibly rebuild their credit and future finances. Check it out today to see what they have to offer you.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good: I am finally starting to feel better. This cold has really knocked me for a loop. It's been the worst one that I've had in ages (knock on wood). The weekend was pretty much spent feeling awful. Stuffy head, nose, ears, dizziness, diarrhea, coughing, aches, etc. NOT FUN! But, like I said, the good thing is that I am now feeling a lot better. The stuffiness is pretty much gone. The dizziness is also gone as well as the diarrhea (thankfully!). The coughing is still here, but getting better each day although my sides are really sore from using those muscles. I still believe it is just a cold, not the flu, as I've not had any fever with it.

The Bad: I had a big long post typed up and my computer crashed! So, had to write it up all over again. DANG IT!

The Ugly: The pool guy STILL hasn't shown up to close our pool for the winter! They called me two weeks ago and said that I needed to get our water sample up to their office ASAP in order to see what type of chemicals they were going to need to bring to add to the pool. Well, I did that last Monday. I took time out of my BUSY day to run twenty minutes over to the next town to take this water sample to them. I spent ten minutes driving around because they'd changed their office hours and neglected to tell me that when they called. I then spent another thirty minutes waiting on them to run the water sample and figure out what I needed to buy to put in the pool. All of this when I'm feeling like crap anyway (that was the day I first started getting sick). They told me, as I walked out their front door, that they would be sending the guys out one day that week (last week) to get the pool covered and closed. The only thing I had to do before they came was add the chlorine that I purchased that day. That was it. They'd be out that week and I wouldn't have to worry about buying any more chemicals or running the pool pump, using electricity that really wasn't necessary anymore. But, do they show up? NO!!!! So, now I'm into another week and having to add more chemicals and use more electricity to circulate water in a pool that we haven't used in the past THREE WEEKS! The temperature of the water is down to 66 degrees so even if it warms up this week, like the forecast is saying, I doubt it warms up the water enough to swim. If I don't get a call today from the pool guy, saying that he'll be out here tomorrow, I'm going to give them a call AND a piece of my mind. Ok, maybe I won't give them a piece of my mind. I really can't afford to be giving that away, but you know what I mean:)

No Motivation Today

I have absolutely NO MOTIVATION today. I think a lot of it has to do with the beginnings of a cold that I am so fortunate to be coming down with. My head is stuffy, my ears are popping, my throat is sore and all I want to do is crawl back under the covers and sleep. I definitely don't want to WORK!!! But, alas, that is one of the perils of working at home. There isn't anybody else here to push your work off on. So, I guess I need to get my behind in gear and get going. That is, AFTER I fix my lunch. See?!?! Absolutely no motivation at all today:)

Let's Go Green

I've been trying my best to reduce my carbon footprint in the world. I've found that the easiest thing I've done to go green around my house is to replace all of my regular light bulbs with the new 5W LED E27 Edison Light Bulb. This new LED replacement bulb saves energy and are long lasting. The 5W LED E27 Edison Light Bulb lasts for up to 50,000 hours which is 50 times LONGER then a regular light bulb. They are also more durable (ie. no fragile broken glass) and don't contain toxic mercury like a CFL (compact flourescent) bulb does.

If you want to reduce the size of your carbon footprint and save money too, why not buy some of the new 5W LED E27 Edison Light Bulbs today.

How Many Days?

I was sitting here today, not doing much of anything, when this annoying little question popped into my head. How many days are left until Christmas? I know, most people don't want to hear this. Most of you are just getting used to the idea of summer coming to an end and the school year starting. I'm usually one of those who waits until at least November before I even start thinking about Christmas, but for some reason the thought decided to strike me today.

I thought about counting on the calendar exactly how many days are left, but then thought "You know, there's got to be something on the internet that gives you the exact days, hours, minutes, seconds, and such" so I decided to search. Boy, was I surprised at how many links came up.

There was a link to Countdown to Christmas, a neat little website that is right to the point. I also came across Santa's Official Countdown to Christmas. On this website you can see how many days are left and you can also write a letter to Santa or even check to see if you're on the Naughty or Nice list. But, I think my favorite website was Christmas Countdown which not only lets you count down the days until Christmas, but also to any other special event you might be looking forward to. Unfortunately, you do have to pay for this one, but it isn't too bad and would be something fun to have on your computer.

So, now that I've made everyone else have that annoying little question run through their heads, I'll be signing off. Merry Christmas.....in 108 days:):):)

Oh, My Aching Back

It's not my back this time, but my son's. He came home from school yesterday almost unable to walk, sit, lay down, stand up, etc. He still has no idea what started the back spasms, but he said he'd had them all day long and every little movement was pure torture. We got out the trusty old heating pad and he popped a couple of ibuprofen and just lounged on the couch the rest of the evening. He was feeling a bit better when he went to bed, but had him take a couple more ibuprofen just be on the safe side.

Well, he got up this morning in just as much pain as before so he stayed home from school. Yes, this is the second day he's missed in just as many weeks, but I know if I'd forced him to go that I would have gotten a phone call a few hours later, if that, to come and pick him up. Might as well just let him stay home in the first place and save me a trip into town.

I did call the chiropractor though and he said to bring him in so loaded my poor boy into the car and drove to the chiropractor's office. There, the Dr. went through some questions like Did you fall recently? Did you twist suddenly? etc. No to all questions, but then again this is my son, who likes to play basketball and skateboard, so he could have done any of those things and just didn't want to say so for fear of his mom getting upset. The Dr. then had him lay on the funny looking table and went to work on him. By the time the Dr. was finished, my son said he was so relaxed that he could have easily took a nice little nap right there, but he didn't. Dr. said that my son definitely had a lot of inflammation and to take it easy the rest of today. He can go to school tomorrow, but no gym class and then tomorrow afternoon I have to take my son back to the chiropractor for more adjusting. At least my son is able to move now, even if it is slowly. Just hope he is still feeling good enough tomorrow to go to school and that he doesn't get jostled around or any thing to make his back feel worse.

Back to Boring?

I think I'm getting back into the normal swing of things around here. The past few weeks were really stressful and intense and, of course, sad. But, now that the funeral is over and things have calmed down a little bit, I'm hoping that I get back into the groove of things and that my life will just be boring for awhile.

Mom and I made it back into Curves this morning and actually made it through the circuit without collapsing. Although, I have to admit, I was huffing and puffing during the last few machines. I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow, but that's ok. After the way I've been eating these past few weeks, I need to be working out and I need to be sore. I tried to restart my healthy eating plan today too, but that went by the wayside come dinnertime. My hubby brought home Chinese! I was a bit upset, but I couldn't be mad at him because he thought he was doing something nice by bringing food home so that I didn't have to cook. I'll give him this one, but did let him know that if he wants to be nice again that maybe he should bring home Subway or something else that is just a bit healthier.

Normal posts....they might be boring, but I am hoping that I have several more of them to write....at least for awhile.

Funeral

Yesterday was my grandma's funeral. It was a beautiful service, but a very long day. The visitation was beforehand so we were at the funeral home from 11am until 3pm. But, I got to see a lot of family and friends who I've not seen in a long time and we caught up on each other lives. Just wish we hadn't waited until grandma's death to do it.

Afterwards, at the cemetery, I was chatting with my mom and aunt when my daughter put her head on my mom's shoulder. I thought she was just leaning on my mom for comfort, but the next thing we knew she was on the ground! My daughter passed out! Everyone scrambled to help her up, get water, cover her legs with a jacket (she had a dress on so didn't want her flashing anybody), etc. She ended up on the ground for about five minutes. She wasn't out for long, but had to get her bearings. My cousin, who is a nurse, was checking her out and we think that she passed out due to the stress of the day, the heat (we were standing in the sun) and lack of food and drink. She'd not eaten much that morning. She's fine now thankfully, but talk about giving her poor mom more gray hairs! Geez!

Back to School Time

Today was the first day back to school for my two kids. Neither was really ready to go back, but I think they were both happy to see their friends again.

My daughter is a Junior this year. Wow, do I feel old! It was bad enough at the end of last school year when she got her driver's license, but to now send her off to school WITHOUT my having to drive her, well, that was almost too much to handle. I hate to even think how her Senior year is going to feel. I might not want to send her back to school then!

My son started Jr. High today so this was a whole new experience for him. New school, new teachers, etc. He's not the big man on campus anymore, but a lowly little 7th grader. He seems to have done well for his first day though. He didn't get lost and said he found all of his classes just fine. He did have a bit of trouble with his gym lock, but I think he'll do fine once he gets some practice using it. He said tomorrow will be the real test because it will be a full day with a full class schedule. He's looking forward to it though.

Both came home with another list of school supplies so will try to get those things picked up tomorrow for them. I thought I was finished with my back to school shopping, but I guess not. Not a problem though because most things are being marked down now so they're super cheap. lol

TGIF

This has been one looooonnnnnnggggg week. I'm exhausted and really hoping this weekend is calm and quiet to give me a chance to recuperate.

Funeral arrangments have been made for my grandma. It will take place next Thursday. I took the kids with me today to get some nice clothes to wear. I had absolutely nothing, same with my son. My daughter just wanted something new:) Anyway, that seemed to take forever. You'd think black dress pants and a nice black dressy top would be fairly easy to find.....nope. I did finally find something that would work though. My son found a nice pair of khaki jeans and a nice polo shirt to wear and he'll be able to wear them other places so at least they won't just sit in his closet. My daughter found a really nice dress too. Also bought some nice shoes for my daugher and myself and the best part of that was that both pair were on clearance and had been marked way down in price. Mine were only $3.00!!! I figure I can handle that since I'll probably never wear them again. I'm just not a dressy person. I live in blue jeans and tee shirts.

After clothes shopping, I met my mom and aunt at the flower shop and we picked out the funeral spray for grandma's casket and I also ordered a bunch to be just from me, hubby and my kids. I ordered all lavender flowers since that was grandma's favorite color. I think she'd like that:)

At some point this weekend, I need to get my son's hair cut and also need to get mine colored. I know grandma wouldn't have cared if we were a bit scraggly, but I want to look nice anyway.

School starts Monday so at least that will give the kids something to help take their minds off what is going on. They will have to miss school on Thursday for the funeral, but both have said they want to go. I'm not going to say no.

Work is still working. I wish I wasn't self-employed now because if I worked for someone else I could at least take a day off. Here I can't seem to do that. The phone is still ringing and even though I haven't been answering every call, I am still pretty busy. It's helped keep me from breaking down though so guess, in a way, that is good.

Grandma 8/22/07

Grandma is still hanging on. We think she is waiting on two of her sons to come see her, but I don't know if that will happen. The one son is in New Hampshire. He says he'll be here, but it's taking time to get plans arranged. The other son lives in Washington DC and his wife is very ill so he's not able to just drop everything and come either.

I've been at the nursing home every day. Today when I was sitting by grandma's bedside, I held her hand and she squeezed so hard I thought she was going to cut off the circulation! It felt good though, knowing that she knew I was there. She does look at you now and will follow you with her eyes as you walk around the room, but there's still no speech and she can't move her right side.

Her body wasn't processing the fluids that she was getting via IV so they took her off of that. The doctor said that it was actually making her worse because the fluids had nowhere to go. Her hands are very swollen because of this, but that will eventually be reabsorbed back into her body. She was also very congested, but is now breathing much easier. She still coughs, but nothing like she.

The Hospice nurses have talked to the family and gave us information on what to expect. It was hard to read, but it does answer some of our questions. Everyone knows that grandma won't be with us much longer so we're all trying to spend as much time with her as possible. I think grandma knows this and appreciates not being alone.

Grandma gazes at the ceiling a lot during the day when she is awake and mom said today that she wished she knew what grandma was seeing. I told mom that grandma is watching all of her angels and that right in the middle of the group is my grandpa, waiting patiently with open arms. Of course, mom cried, but she said that was the most beautiful and peaceful image for her to imagine and it was something that made her feel good to think about. I told her that is how I get through the day, by knowing that there are so many people waiting to have grandma with them again.

8/20

Not good news about my grandma. They are moving her back to the nursing home, but putting her in Hospice care. The doctors don't think she will be with us much longer. They couldn't confirm it at the hospital, but are pretty sure she had a stroke. She can't move her right side, can't talk and is pretty much out of it. She doesn't recognize anyone at all. My mom said that if I want to see her and tell her goodbye that I need to be at the nursing home today to do so. I'm so not ready to do this.

Lap Band Surgery

I've tried every diet known to man and still am overweight. I've seriously been considering lap-band surgery to help me in my weight loss journey.

Lap band, to me, seems like a much safer alternative compared to the gastric bypass surgery. With lap-band surgery, the surgeons "will use laparoscopic techniques. This means that he or she will be making tiny incisions (rather than a large incision) and inserting special long-shafted instruments through these tiny incisions in order to wrap the inflatable silicone band around the upper part of your stomach. A narrow camera is passed through one of the incisions so your surgeon can view the operative site on a nearby video monitor. Like a wristwatch, the LAP-BAND ® is fastened around the upper stomach to create the new stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food you eat. The band is then locked securely in a ring around the stomach.

This creates a small stomach pouch that can hold a smaller amount of food so food storage in the stomach is reduced. The gastric band also controls the size of the stomach outlet between the new upper pouch and the lower part of the stomach. When the outlet is smaller, you feel full faster, while the food moves more slowly between your upper and lower stomach as it is digested. This procedure will allow you to feel full and satisfied while you actually eat less and lose weight."

JourneyLite is a nationwide network of lap band surgical facilities and surgeons who specialize in the LAPBAND procedure. If you are located or will be traveling to Los Angeles LA, Houston Texas and Tampa Florida, they have facilities located there.

Grandma is in the hospital yet again. The nurses at the nursing home said she was unresponsive, not answering anyone, just staring into space, so they took her back to the hospital. My dad called me at 3pm this afternoon, but I've not heard anything else. My sister inlaw, who works at the nursing home, said that the last time she'd seen grandma that grandma had told her that she was ready to see Jesus and her husband, who passed away in 1985. It's sad to say, but maybe it would be for the best if grandma just let go. This is her third trip to the hospital in the last few weeks. I don't want her to go, but I don't want her to suffer anymore either and truthfully, I feel like that is what is happening now, that she is suffering. I will fill you all in when I hear more.

She's Back

Grandma is back at the nursing home again. They released her from the hospital this morning and she was back in her room by 11:30am. I didn't hear a lot screaming and yelling so I'm guessing she didn't put up too much of a fight. My mom said she was going to go visit with her this afternoon so I'm hoping that grandma wasn't too mad about having to go back to the nursing home and not to her house.

Edit: Mom said that when she went to see grandma that she was very tired and sad. She is still not feeling the best and just wants to sleep. Mom said that grandma doesn't have much fight in her at all and she thinks that she has given up the fight. I hope this isn't the case.

Missionary Travel

A girl that I go to the gym with has been chatting lately about how she'd love to become a missionary and travel to all of these other country's to help people. The only problem she is having is that missionary travel can be quite expensive. Enter Golden Rule Travel. They know what it means to be called by God to the mission field and will try to help find the lowest possible travel airfare out there for you.

Update on my Grandma

Well, grandma is back in the hospital again. They took her from the nursing home last night because she had a fever of 102. When they got her to the hospital, they took a chest x-ray and immediately started her on antibiotics. She was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and a small spot of infection on her lung, which if not caught this early, would have probably turned into pneumonia. She is in ICU, for now, and will probably be in the hospital for a couple of days.

My mom is feeling terrible because when she visited with grandma on Tuesday afternoon, grandma kept saying she was really, really tired. Mom thinks she should have known that something wasn't quite right, but she didn't say anything and now feels terrible about it. I told her that grandma was saying she was really tired on Monday when I visited her too and I didn't catch it either. I just figured she was tired from all her therapy and was needing sleep to recoup from that.

So, we are back to running to the hospital again. My poor mom and aunt are running themselves ragged. When I talked to my mom this morning, you could tell she was just exhausted.

I don't have anymore news for now, but will update again when I do.

Need Help with Schoolwork?

School is about to start in our neck of the woods again and I'm already checking into some help for my kids. I have found a very Innovative Tutor through the Score Learning Centers.

They offer help to children ages 4 to 14 in reading and math. I'm going to check into it and see if my kids qualify for their program. If you would like to learn more about their program, go to www.escore.com and check them out.

Have you been Simpsonized yet?

You've probably seen the commercials on tv. Burger King is a sponsor for The Simpsons Movie. They have the toys for their kids meals and also have a fun little website where you can make yourself look like a Simpson character. If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it. It's very fun and pretty addictive.

All you need is a close up picture of your face which is at least 640x480, approximately a 5x7 one. Scan it into your computer and go to Simpsonize Me, upload it to the website and they will convert it into a Simpson's character for you.

Here is what they came up with for me:

It doesn't really look like me, but I like what they came up with. I also did my hubby. Here is what they came up with for him:

Actually, this is what they came up with for hubby the second time we uploaded his picture. The first time, he was bald with just a few sprouts of hair on his chin! It was hilarious!

Anyway, if you have some free time on your hands, check out Simpsonize Me. You'll be glad that you did.

My grandma

Last Friday, my grandmother, who turned 99 years old on July 21st, had to be admitted to the hospital because of massive bleeding. They ended up transfusing her with 4 pints of blood and she stayed there for 4 days. Tuesday evening she was transferred to our local nursing home to rebuild her strength before, hopefully, going home. Today was the first day that I've made it in to see her. When we got to her room, she was asleep in her chair, but she did wake up and carry on a decent conversation for about an hour. She ate lunch and afterwards started nodding off so we (mom, me and my kids) left her to get some rest.

I am keeping my fingers crossed and saying several prayers each day that she is able to go back to her home. She has lived on her own since my grandfather passed away in 1985 so is very used to her independence. But, I also know that she is 99 years old and when your body gets to be that age it doesn't bounce back as quickly or as often as it did when you were younger so it is highly possible that she will not be able to go back to her home again.

I am saying many prayers each day that it doesn't come to her spending the last of her lifetime in a nursing home. I know she wants to be in HER home with HER things and spend her life with the people that she loves.

Feelin' hot, hot, hot!!!

OMG! It is so hot here. This past week, temps have been in the 90's each day. Today it was 100! Felt like 110! Ugh. Can you believe that it's even been too hot to enjoy the swimming pool? I know that's weird to hear, but when the water temp is 92 degrees it just isn't refreshing at all. Thankfully, we've got central air. I don't know how I'd cope if we didn't. They say these temps will continue into this weekend and by the looks of the future forecast for next week, the humidity might calm down a little but the temps are still going to be in the mid 90's. I'm hoping that changes. I feel for all those people who have to work outdoors in these temps. Just going outside to get the mail has me practically melting.

New Movie

Have you heard that Rob Zombie is writing and directing a new version of the movie, Halloween? I saw previews for it the other day and it looks like it is going to be an awesome movie.

I remember watching all of the Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies when I was younger. I loved them and actually watched the Halloween movies several times over and over again. I still like the occasional scary movie and will definitely go see Halloween the movie once it hits theaters on August 31st.

I think this version of Halloween the movie will be much darker and scarier since Rob Zombie is the one directing it. He just has that type of aura and I think that is just bound spill over into his writing. I mean, how could it not. Jamie Lee Curtis was my favorite actress from the original movie, but unfortunately she's not in this one. Danielle Harris, who was in Halloween 4 and 5 playing Jamie Lee's daughter, is back again for this Halloween movie, but will be playing a completely different character. Here's a preview of the movie trailer.

See what I mean? Scary! I am so looking forward to this movie's release date. I've already marked my calendar and will set aside that Friday night for a good, scary movie to see with my sweetie.

Thankful Thursday

It's Thankful Thursday and I wanted to log in here and tell you what I'm most thankful for today.

1) My best friend....I don't get to see her as much as I'd like because she lives out of state, but when she does make it here for a visit we try to spend as much time together as we can. She made it here for a visit this week and yesterday she came out, bringing her kids along for a swim in our pool. What a fun afternoon we had. I just wish she lived closer so we could spend more time together. I don't realize how much I miss her friendship until I've gotten a taste of it again.
2) My mom.....I really don't know what I would do without her in my life. She is more then just a mother to me, she is a good friend. I feel that I can tell her pretty much anything that is going on in my life and whether she approves or not, she gives me her honest opinion on the subject.
3) My kids....They might be onery, but I love them with all my heart. And even though it will be nice to get my peace and quiet back this fall once school restarts, I'll miss them popping their heads into my home office just to say Hi.

You know I could go on and on about a lot more things that I'm thankful for, but will stop here and save the rest for another Thankful Thursday.

Hockey

I'm not a big fan of sports. I don't watch football, basketball, baseball, etc. unless it is our high school team and I know some of the kids. I've just never understood why people are such fans of those sports. That is until I sat down and watched a hockey game that my son had on. To begin with, I was just watching the guys skate and thinking about the skill that it took to stay upright on those things. Then I actually started watching the game and realized, "Hey, this is very enjoyable". And then a fight broke out and for some reason that really got my adrenaline going and for the rest of the game I was on the edge of my seat, rooting the guys on and screaming every time they'd score.

So, now I'm kind of a hockey fan, I guess, and am interested in seeing how the hockey draft goes. I found a great website that promotes the draft and you can check it out by visiting hockeysfuture.com. There you will find the top prospects, NHL rankings, ISS Top 10, News and Links to all things hockey.

New Harry Potter book

Yes, I am a Harry Potter fan. I never thought I would be, but I was hooked after the first book. I have waited patiently each time a new book came out and then devoured the entire thing, usually in one sitting. So, it probably comes as no surprise that I did snatch up a copy of the newest book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, when it came out on Saturday. Actually, I had preordered it about 4 months ago and it arrived via USPS that afternoon. I immediately sat down and started to read. I wasn't able to read the entire book that day, but from what I've read so far it is very very good. I believe that I will be finished at some point this evening. I am not going to write any spoilers here because, if you're like me, you want to read the book for yourself. I will be happy to discuss the book, however, with anyone who has already read it. Just drop me an email.

Freeze It

Ok, so as most of you know, I joined Curves back in March. I've been going faithfully 3 days a week ever since. That is until my mom decided to go to Hawaii for two weeks. See, we always go to the gym together and it just didn't' seem fair to me that I was still going and working out when she was lounging on the beach, drinking mai tais! So, I took that time off too. I stayed in bed late every day and didn't work out at all. I did swim in the pool almost every day, but nothing too strenuous was done. I was on vacation too.

Well, needless to say, our first day back in the gym was pure torture! My muscles were screaming at me. I was sore in places that I didn't think I could be sore! I needed some relief and I needed it fast! Imagine my surprise when I received a free sample of the new pain relief gel known as Freeze It in the mail. I immediately had to try it out to see if it worked.

Forgive me for not smiling in this picture, but I am too sore to do so.

After applying the cool gel to my thigh muscles, I waited on it to go to work. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! Within seconds, the coolness turned warm and that warmth soaked right into my muscles, immediately soothing the aches and pain. I like it much better then some of the other pain relief gels on the market today. Freeze It is stain free, greaseless and has a vanishing scent and the best part is that is is so much cheaper then other brands. Check out their commercial and see for yourself.

I highly recommend picking up some Freeze It the next time you head to the store. If you ever have sore muscles, this product is #1 on providing you relief.

Who's Right?

Two different opinions here. Please tell me which one is right.

The background: Work at Home business has informal office. No set hours really, work out of the house, take care of home, family and work at the same time.

Side #1: Office help answers phones from time she gets out of bed in morning until she goes to bed at night, does billing and any other business stuff that is needed, but if something comes up with kids or family takes takes the time during the day to take care of the problem then works later into the evening to make up for it. If cars oil needs changed, she goes early in the morning then comes back and answers any messages that have been left. She does not take a lunch hour but rather answers phones, does paperwork, etc. while eating at her desk. She does not take specific breaks either and usually has the phone with her wherever (and I do mean wherever) she goes so as not to miss any calls. Also works on weekends, but does not get paid for anything or get thanks or gratitude for doing anything.

Side #2: Owner of business is out working physcially from 4am to 6pm most days of the week. He does not take a lunch or a break either. When something needs done he calls office help and expects it to be done at that exact minute. Expects office help to be on call 24-7 whether it is weekday or weekend. Does not want office help to do anything except set by the phone, waiting for people to call. If office help needs to get things done with kids, owner does not want it to be during business hours however also doesn't want office help to take the day off to do those things. For example, doctor's appt. should always be on weekends but our doctor doesn't work on weekends and other things like that which can only be done during the week. He also expects office help to drop everything at once if HE needs her to run somewhere or do something for him. Never says good job, never says thank you for any job that office help does. Contantly yells at office help when things are not right, but when office help gets upset and yells back it is her fault and she shouldn't do that.

Ok, I'm sure you realize that office help is me and owner is hubby. But please tell me who is in the right here? We've always said from the very beginning of this business that if things had to be done during the weekday that it would be fine that I do them as long as work didn't suffer. Work has NEVER suffered from my being gone a few hours during the day. Very rarely do I leave this house unless it is at the end of the week and things are slow business-wise and even when I do leave, if I come home to messages I IMMEDIATELY return those calls. We've NEVER had set office hours in the entire 5 years that we've done this. People call anywhere from 5am to 11pm so how can we? I do put a limit on when I take phone calls, but apparantly even that is wrong to do. Now hubby has forbidden me from going to lunch with my grandma who will be turning 99(!!!) years old this Saturday because it will interfere with "the workday". I am sick and tired of it. If this was an actual office setting then I could understand it, but it's not. If any other "boss" treated me this way, I would have quit a long time ago, but with it being my hubby I can't very well do that without risking marital strife too.

So, anyway, anybody that has any comments I'd really appreciate them. Even if they are comments stating that I am in the wrong, please leave them here. It's entirely possible that I am not seeing how wrong I am in this situation.

Update: Just got a call from Mr. Wonderful and now he is saying how sorry he is for acting like a jerk, I do a lot for him and he doesn't want to fight anymore. Ok, so apparantly he's had time to "think" about today, but you know what? It'll happen again in another week or two. This is a neverending episode in our lives right now. He yells, I cry/yell, he apologizes, I continue to walk around on eggshells. I just wish he'd stop yelling in the first place. If he has a problem, talk about it instead of immediately jumping down my throat. I guess he's never heard that you catch more flies with honey. Oh well, I guess this will make for an interesting evening. At least it won't be an extremely tense one.

Wordless Wednesday

Wordless Wednesday

What flavor would you like?

Ok, I'm still on the ice cream subject. Yes, I should write about something more interesting, but some days subjects just don't pop into my head as easily as others and I take much needed inspiration from things that I read. Don't like it? Skip this post then. Interested? Read on.....

The number one selling ice cream flavor is vanilla. I, personally, can't stand vanilla and would think that my purchase of chocolate alone would send that flavor skyrocketing into first place. No such luck though as chocolate came in fifth with only 8% of the vote. Looks like I need to step up and buy more chocolate. lol! Other flavors that made the list were, in order, fruit flavors, nut flavors, candy mix-in flavors, chocolate, cake and cookie flavors, neapolitan, other (no idea what these would be) and finally coffee/mocha.

Some more ice cream trivia:

...Each American consumes a yearly average of 23.2 quarts of ice cream, ice milk, sherbet, ices and other commercially produced frozen dairy products.

...More ice cream is sold on Sunday than any other day of the week.

...Ice cream consumption is the highest during July and August. Could that be because July is National Ice Cream Month?

...The average number of licks to polish off a single scoop ice cream cone is approximately 50.

Ok, I think I'm "full" now and will stop with the ice cream talk.

Save some Moolah!

I love to shop online, but never do so without first checking out some online coupons. You can save a ton of money just by taking a few minutes to look online BEFORE you purchase anything.

For example, I order all of our business supplies online. I just found SIX Office Depot coupon code offers on the CouponChief website. With the money I save using these coupons, I can buy extra supplies for next month!

Why not check out CouponChief.com to see what great deals you can find?

I Scream for Ice Cream!

Did you know that ice cream is America's SECOND favorite dessert? I really thought it would be number one, but after reading an article in the newspaper today I now know otherwise. According to a Nielson survey of supermarket sales, they found that ice cream is indeed second choice among Americans.

This is how shoppers divided their dollars for sweets:

1) cookies $3.6 billion spent
2) ice cream $2.3 billion spent
3) frozen novelties $1.4 billion spent
4) frozen yogurt $631 million spent
5) doughnuts $431 million spent
6) ice milk/sherbet $328 million spent
7) pie $178 million spent
8) cheesecake $12 million spent

TOTAL: $8.88 billion spent on sweets. I was kind of shocked not to see cake on that list. If there is anything better then ice cream, it is definately cake....with a dollop of ice cream on top:)

MedicScan

Helping to care for my grandmother has shown me several things about the medical profession that need work. One of those is the way her doctor deals with her medical card. Every time we go for a doctor's visit, the girl behind the counter wants all the medical information off my grandma's medical card to be written out on a form. I've always thought it would be so much easier if they had a way to scan grandma's card and then store the information on their computer. It would mean so much less paperwork for the doctor and the patient.

I think they would really benefit from buying an insurance card scanner such as MedicScan. The MedicScan + ScanShell 800N package would let the doctor easily scan the image of medical insurance cards, which could then be stored as a file on their computer for future reference.

This would definitely improve customer service, mean less paper work, increase productivity and reduce human errors. From what I've read about it, it is also very easy to use. All you have to do is insert the card into the ScanShell 800N medical card scanner. Automatic detection will trigger the scan and scan the card in a matter of seconds. Then, MedicScan will take over the process and export or store the image depending on YOUR settings.

I'm going to be passing this information on to my grandma's doctor and see what he thinks about it. Anything to make life simpler is a plus in my book.

The real queen of our home

Anybody with pets knows that they are part of the family. Anybody with a cat knows that the cat is the "ruler" of the roost. Just to prove my point, here is a picture of our cat, April. She "owns" this computer chair in my daughters room. Nobody else is allowed to sit on it but her. If she comes into the room and sees someone else on it, she will jump onto their lap and root around until they remove themselves. She will then curl up and look at you like she is saying, "Hey, don't you KNOW who I am?".

Independence Day

I know, I'm a day early on my 4th of July post, but I'm hoping that tomorrow I am way too busy relaxing to even turn my computer on. I will be working for part of the morning, but the rest of the day I have scheduled to take it easy.

Anyway, I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy and Safe 4th of July. I hope that everyone is able to take the time off to relax and enjoy the day with friends and family, watch the fireworks that evening and reflect on how lucky we are to live in the USA.

July already?

Wow, I can't believe that it is July already! This summer is flying by way too fast. I guess it is because 1) I'm getting older and 2) I've been so busy. I can't do anything about the getting older part, but maybe soon the busy part will calm down.

Over the weekend, I was able to get away with hubby for some rest and relaxtion. We went to the casino (unfortunately, we didn't win) and spent the night away. It was nice to have hubby all to myself even if it was just for 24 hours. The next night, my daughter had a friend over to spend the night so it wasn't quite as quiet, but we all still had fun. Hubby and I took the kids (daughter/friend/son) out for dinner then bowling. That was fun especially since nobody except hubby is very good at it:) It actually got to the point that my son and I were seeing who could knock down the LEAST amount of pins on their turn. Needless to say, hubby won every game, but that was fine. We had fun anyway.

This week looks to be busy again, but when isn't it busy here. No holiday off for us either. We'll be working on Wednesday, but hopefully we'll still have time to see the fireworks that night.

Other then that, it's really been pretty boring here. I'll post more later if anything exciting happens around here.

Another Week

This week seems to be starting out fairly well. My weekend was even better then I thought it would be. The way things were going last week, I really didn't think things would ever get better, but they seem to be going in the right direction for a change. Maybe someone up there finally realized that my family had taken all the crap they could for awhile and decided to change things for us. Whatever it is, I'm just very glad. The tears, the yelling, the tense and stressful situations were just becoming too much to bear. I'm sure we'll have those things again, but hopefully not in such magnitude.

A Personal Post

Well, I had a really big long post typed up and then after reading it I realized that I really didn't want the entire world to see what I'm dealing with right now. Let's just say it's not been too awfuly fun around here lately, very stressful and lots of tears have been shed because of it. I'm hoping that things calm down soon, but I'm not going to hold my breath about it.

I need a vacation

I need a vacation badly! My favorite vacation is to go to a nice, hot beach and just lay on my beach towel and relax. Every so often, I'll get up and take a dip in the ocean to cool off then back to the beach towel. And, I also like to build sandcastles every once in awhile too especially with my kids. It just takes me back to my childhood and reminds me of all the fun I had when my brother and I would build sandcastles together. Unfortunately, I can't get away right now to take that vacation, but thankfully, I ran across a really cool website where I can build virtual Sandcastles and get that relaxing, beachy feeling without leaving the house. See what I made today....

Wanna know where I found this really neat interactive tool? Well, it's at www.virtualsandcastle.com and it is super easy and fun to use. And to top it off, it's very relaxing to do. That was my perk from finding it anyway. You get the fun of building a cool looking sandcastle, but don't have to deal with the drive to the beach or the sand in your underwear. If I can't take an actual vacation then I'll definitely be building sandcastles on this website a lot.

Sunburn

OMG! First sunburn of the summer and boy does it hurt! I totally screwed up today when I went out to the pool by not taking the suntan lotion out with me. Normally, I take it out with me and reapply after I've been in the pool for an hour or so, but for some reason today I didn't. I guess I just wasn't thinking. That'll teach me. My arms and shoulders and upper back are pretty red as are my cheeks and nose. I've put aloe on this evening and taken a couple of ibuprofen for the swelling/pain and hopefully I'll feel just fine tomorrow.

Deck Problems

The deck that should have been done by this past weekend still hasn't even been started. Why? you ask. Well, the guy who we'd asked to do it, the one who promised it would be done by the weekend, the one who went ahead and bought all the lumber, decided at the last minute that he didn't have time to do it after all. His day job was keeping him too busy. Can you say p***ed off?!?!?

I've scrambled since Friday, trying to find someone else who would be willing to do it for us. Finally, this morning I get a call back from a local contractor who said he was on his way out to our house to give me an estimate. When he got here, he said it would be no problem to fit us into his schedule, BUT.....yes, there was a but. But he said from the looks of the pile of wood we have in our yard, he didn't think that our drop-out contractor bought enough! Great. We've already spent $1600 for lumber, concrete, nails, etc. and now this new guy is telling me that we might have to buy even more? Good grief! He is supposed to get a labor estimate to me this afternoon or evening. If it's not a lot then I'll go ahead and tell him to schedule us, but if it's way more then I'm willing to pay then I guess it's back to the drawing board.

I swear, this pool is just not working out the way we thought it would. First it seemed to take forever to get installed and now the deck is to. Must just be my luck.

Reno 911-The Movie

Have you seen Reno 911! Miami The Movie yet? I have. We saw it the first week it was out at theaters. It was really good. Very funny. My favorite character in the show and movie is Jim Dangle. There is just something about him prancing around in his super short shorts that is hilarious! And, having Trudy chase after him is funny too. I mean, just look at him Trudy, can you not tell he is gay? I think my favorite part in the movie was when the other police departments finally took notice of how good a job the Reno sheriffs department did settling things at the end of the movie. They were finally recognized as doing a good job and that just made it all right in my eyes. They are always screwing things up on the show so it was nice to see them do something right for a change in the movie.

If you didn't get a chance to see Reno 911! Miami The Movie in theaters, then you will be happy to know that on June 19, 2007 it is coming out on DVD. You'll be able to enjoy watching Dangle, Jr, Trudy and all the others in the comfort of your own home. You can check out a clip of the movie here.

Swim Meet Cancelled

My daughters first home swim meet was cancelled for this evening. I guess not enough kids wanted to compete from the opposing team. Daughter is bummed, but I have to admit that I'm kind of relieved. Not that I don't like to watch my daughter swim, but it's 90+ degrees out there, the pool has no shade whatsoever, and I'm fighting a headache that I know would have only gotten worse if I'd gone. I will go to her next one though and several others after that, I'm sure, but I'm secretly happy that I don't have to do this one tonight. Whew!

Tuesday

We've had our pool for a couple of weeks now and are really enjoying it. However, the skimpy little ladder that came with the pool just isn't working out. It's wobbly and every time someone gets in or out of the pool, we're afraid it is going to break. So, I called a friend of ours and he's coming out today to start building us a deck. He bought the lumber yesterday and said he'd start work this afternoon/evening. I'm glad. It will just make the pool that much nicer.

We're having him build an L-shaped deck so that I can get around the pool to sweep it out. Having to stand along the side to do it is for the birds since, as DH so lovingly tells me, I have super short arms and legs. Yes, we have the telescopic pole to help out, but when you can't see where the dirt is it just makes it very hard to do. Last week, the pool was warm enough to get into while I swept and that was really easy, but Sunday when I swept it out again the water was only 78 degrees, too chilly for me, so I sat on the top step of the ladder and swept what I could reach that way. My son tried to help me out, but he's only a couple of inches taller then me and it was even too hard for him to reach some areas.

So, anyway, the deck should be done by this weekend according to Jay. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one. I'll take progress pictures along the way and then will post them here for everyone to see (or skip if they find them boring:)once it is finished.
